Rome: Apud Jo. Mariam Salvioni Typographum, 1752. 4to, contemporary vellum over boards; gilt-lettered spine within gilt border; edges speckled in red. lSomwhat warped. Excellent copy of the first and only edition of this fundamental history of mosaics from antiquity until Furietti's own time. Title page printed in red and black with engraved vignette. Handsome engraved head-and-tailpieces and historiated initials throughout. Six full page plates of which four are folding. The work resulted from Furietti's discoveries in the ruins of Hadrian's villa. The first plate is the drinking doves mosaic described by Pliny in his Historiae Naturalis and which is now in the Capitoline Museum. Other plates include a Persian floor mosaic. 1752. Rome, J.M. Salivioni, 1752. Halftitle, title pp v-xvi, pp. 1-111, 1 blank, 113 - 119, 1 blank, 120 (misnumbered 211) - 130 pp, 1 errata leaf. 6 plates numbered I-VI, 4 of which are folding. (plates 1 & 6 with old restaurations). Half calf, decorated paper boards (binding rubbed, some waterstaining and foxing). Edges sprinkled red. A copy with large margins. Only edition of a fine work on mosaics by the learned archaeologist Furietti. The first plate depicts the celebrated mosaic of four doves perched on a drinking vessel which the author had discovered at the Villa Adria in 1737 and which Pliny mentions in his Natural History. It is now in the Capitoline Museum. [c.f.Berlin Katalog 3946; Graesse II, 647 (mistakenly indicating 8 plates)]
