About This Item

Muskingum Co. Gun Collectors Assn, Zanesville, OH, 1961. First Edition. Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Good Condition. Good booklet in illustrated wrapper. This is a scare publication to begin with, but what makes it unique and important historically is that its previous owner, gun collector Gary Smith of Thornville, Ohio, conducted his own research and has heavily annotated the booklet, providing additional details and corrections to the text. Among the things he notes are who owned the rifles depicted, what their value was at the time, where various gunsmiths are buried, inscriptions on their tombstones, etc. One of the most interesting parts of the booklet is the local story of how Samuel Colt stole the design for the revolver from the Humbergers. 40 p.: illus., 23 cm. The Index provides the names of about 120 gunsmiths and Smith has provided additional notes there, as well. Size: Octavo (8vo; up to 9 3/4" / 20-25 cm tall). 40 pages. There are two old staples in the front cover where some newspaper clippings used to be attached, but only a frament of one remains. The sheet on which the four innermost pages are printed are detached. They came lose from the staples and then were taped back in place, but the tape has given way now and the sheet is laid in.
