New York: The Macmillan Company, 1916. Hardcover. 176p., the first New York edition, issued same year as the Dublin and struck by the same press, an Edinburgh firm. Hardbound in 7.5x5 inch grey cloth boards gilt, printed on laid-lined stock, spine lettering bordered by gilt rulings, cover lettering empanelled blind. Jacketless with mildest edgewear, spine panel somewhat darkened (evenly) with handling (gilt remains bright), joint-ridges faintly abraded, neat signature and numeral on ffep with a nibbed pen. Hinges totally sound, nothing loose about the textblock, no marks, a good to very good copy.

Dublin and London: Maunsel & Company, Ltd., 1916. AE, the pseudonym of George William Russell (1863-1919), was a prominent member of the Irish Literary Revival. He was a poet and a friend to Joyce and Yeats. "The National Being" is his major work on Irish nationalism, published just after the Easter Uprising. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Not common. Blue cloth binding; titling and ruling in gilt. Clean text; 176 pages,very bright and clear. The endpapers are tanned and there is some foxing to the prelims. There is a contemporary (1916) signature on the FFEP. The spine has faded and the gilt is a bit dulled but remains completely readable. A scarce and important work. In an archival plastic protector. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
