London: James Rivington and James Fletcher, 1739. First Edition — Primera edición. Hardcover — Tapa dura. London, James Rivington and James Fletcher, 1759. En 8º. 2 volúmenes. -I: (20), 455 pp. -II: (8), 387 pp. 1 mapa plegado y 4 láminas a toda página. "This book is considered the foundation of a library of California. While largely devoted to Lower California, it also contains an account of the geography and voyages to the north" (Harper).

Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5") bound in original half leather with brown label in gilt lettering over marbled boards. (Howes C884. Sabin 17501. Field 388. Monaghan 503.) First edition. This work by the author had been written in his declining years. In a biography of his great-grandfather the author alleges in his introduction that the Voyage is a manuscript found in a shipwreck-and even whole chapters of which are either lost or water-soaked beyond legibility, and that he is the translator of this work. Written with greater care than his Letters, the work, except for several fanciful chapters, offers very real interest and authenticity. The numerous notes in the three volumes have appreciable interest. In the Voyage he is still writing of an agrarian Utopia. Pastoral descriptions abound-farmlands,… Read More

Binding Instruction including insertion of plates is at the end of the volume although they were sometimes bound individually. New York: Baker & Godwin, 1863. First Edition. Octavo. 117 pages, Index. Inscribed: "To David C. Acton, with the esteem and respect of his friend, David M. Barnes, July 1864." Acton had been made President of the Board of Police Commissioners in New York in 1860, a position he held until the outbreak of the Civil War. He was replaced by John G. Bergen and John Kennedy who became incapacitated in July 1863 as the mob protesting the draft began to cause mayhem (burning down the Colored Orphan Asylum, p. 117). Acton re-assumed command for the next five days and did not sleep as he quelled the riot. He himself was left with severe health problems for the next five years. Pastedown on verso of Dedicatory page, handwritten note: "Times of August 16, 1863" with newspaper column printing letter to Gen. Harvey Brown which in the later reply from Gen. Brown gives the credit for subduing the riot to Mr. Acton. This book has his name stamped in gilt on the front cover as "Hon. Thomas C. Acton"). One of the great… Read More
