Folding map of Chile in three sheets. Ten full page plates: map, plans, views, one color portrait of Araucanian chief. Volume II - The Andes and Pampas: Minerals, Indian Remains, Mammals (Spencer F. Baird), Birds (John Cassin), etc. Illustrated with color plates (3 of Indian artifacts, 15 of birds), b&w plates, woodcuts, maps. Bound in decorated original brown cloth. Folio (14x21) bound in red half leather over maroon boards. Number 145 of an edition limited to 530 copies. Includes an illustrated essay by Brian Reade, 15 pp. Edward Lear (1812-1888) was a brilliant artist, but only his early creative years were devoted to painting birds. His monograph of the parrots reflects his artistic talent and remains one of the most prized illustrated works of the 19th century.

Philadelphia: Robert P. Smith, 1854. Hardcover. Near Fine. First combined edition, later printing, 1854. With 236 fine hand-colored plates (both engravings and lithographs) each with a tissue guard. Bound in half dark green morocco, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in two compartments, covers have a large gilt-stamped botany illustration in gold on both the front and rear covers, antique marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, lg 8vo (10 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches). The first volume of Michaux covers pines and firs, walnut and hickories, the second volume presents 20 different oaks, with maples, birches, beeches, chestnuts, and nyssas among other groups, and the third volume documents the magnolias along with ribinias, the tulip tree, the catalpa and others. The Volumes II and III of the Nuttall volumes (this set lacks Volume I) cover trees left out of Michaux as well adding descriptions of trees from Oregon, California and the Rocky Mountains where Michaux did not explore and collect. New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1918. Later Edition/Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. In green pictorial cloth with green illustrations and titling. Light edgewear to spine ends. Owner's name, date, address and ""yosemite - 43"" to top of ffep. A small rectangular stain to bottom of ffep where something was laid in place for a while, also tape stains(not scars) to top and bottom of endpapers - assuming where protected jacket rested. Bug hole to top inside of front hinge and rear hinge is beginning to split at top, but still solid. Interior and exterior very clean otherwise. Jacket is very nice with just a few small chip/nicks to spine ends, corners and top edge of flaps, and two 1/2 inch closed tears to top of rear panel and top of rear flap. Later edition/printing based on date of book advertised on rear flap and owner's date - 1925 at the earliest. Three period photos from previous owner laid in.

No dust jacket as issued or missing. Sewn binding. Boards and spine are green cloth, lettering is gilt on spine and front. Back cover has slightly bent corners, some edge wear and minor marks from adjacent book on shelf, but no rips or stains. Spine has some edge wear all four sides but no rips, is clean and quite bright, has a few small creases top and bottom. Front cover is same as back cover with a few marks from what looks like black sealing wax. Page edges are tinted, as issued, slightly sunned. Binding is a bit loose. Inside front and back covers have a bit of age darkening, also ink stamp “Property of the B.C. Mountaineering Club”. On ffep is attached the Rules of the B.C.
