New York: J. J. Augustin, 1939. 1st. Half leather. First Edition. 4to. xvi, 83 pp. Frontispiece, 24 color silk-screen printed plates, portrait etching of the artist Miguelito by H. F. Kraus, numerous text illustrations. Half brown morocco over brown cloth boards, gilt design to front cover; housed in uncommon publisher's slipcase with printed labels to front cover & spine. Minor wear to extremities; slight darkening to spine; faint circular mark to front board else near fine. Slipcase is somewhat worn. The striking plates are printed on imported handmade Japanese paper and depict detailed reproductions of the sandpaintings by Miguelito. These sandpaintings accompany his chants, including Bead Chant and Shooting Chant, two of the most important Navajo rites. Also includes a thorough description and explanation of these rites and the legends associated with them.
