With the author's presentation slip "To James with love from Cecil" mounted to the front free endpaper, presenting the book to his friend James Pope-Hennessey, and with the latter's booklabel to the front free endpaper. Pope-Hennessey and Beaton collaborated on several books around this time, including History Under Fire (1941), documenting air raid damage to London buildings, for which Pope-Hennessy provided the text and Beaton the photographs. Near East is based on three months Beaton spent in the region collecting material for the Air Ministry and the Ministry of Information. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in yellow, top edge red. Photographic frontispiece and 23 photographic plates. Cloth somewhat sunned, tiny chip to spine, some foxing and toning to edges and contents. A good copy.
