London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, & Green, 1864. 4to (29.5 cm, 11.75"). Frontis., [iii]–xvi, 540 pp.; illus.

First edition, and one of 250 large paper copies printed of this lavishly illustrated, quintessentially Victorian Bible. The decorations and initials were drawn and engraved by Henry Shaw, who also supervised the engravings of the illustrations after Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Raphael, and other Italian masters; engravers involved with the project included F. Anderson, James Cooper, Messrs. Dalziel, W.T. Green, William Linton, and many others, all of whom labored mightily in this attempt to reproduce the feel of a 16th-century production.
Binding: Signed reddish-brown morocco binding by Root & Son, with covers and spine gilt extra; extremely wide and handsome turn-ins elaborately gilt tooled.
Provenance: Front fly-leaf with attractively inked gift inscription to the Rev. John Francis O'Hern, the third Bishop of Rochester, NY, dated 1929.

Not in Darlow & Moule. Leather with light restoration; front pastedown with traces of a now-absent bookplate. Small area of front joint (outside) expertly resealed/repaired; the weight of this substantial volume dictates storage on the volume's back, not its lower edge. => A lavishly produced Victorian New Testament, in an impressive binding.

Description:
Very Good 1714, Hamburg Germany. The first ever printing of this seminal classic. The first time that Bible stories were printed specifically for children. Thus it was somewhat "cleansed" before publication. One source I found says that the incest and murder committed by David were altered, among other things. It is four inches by seven inches, and includes 104 plates from engravings, 52 in the Old Testament, and 52 in the New Testament. There are 400 pages of text, plus the eight page introduction. Also, all the plates are on unnumbered pages, for a total of 512 printed pages. The book is in its original calves leather boards and spine, which are still attached but fragile. All pages, including all front and rear endpapers, are present. The last two plates have been repaired at the edges, and several pages inside have edge tears or stains, but they are minimal. There is the expected foxing throughout, and a former owner name and inscription in pencil at the front and a name alone in pencil at the… Read More

Description:
1547 Saint Anselm of Canterbury BIBLE Epistles of Paul Benedictine Scholasticism

"I believe in order that I may understand."
– Anselm of Canterbury
Saint Anselm of Canterbury was an 11th-century Benedictine monk and philosopher. While Anselm was relatively unknown and unrecognized for his philosophical views during his lifetime, he has since been considered the founder of scholasticism and writing about the existence of God in an academic manner rather than purely theological. The ODCC refers to Anselm as being 'the most luminous and penetrating intellect between St. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas…and the father of scholasticism'. Many of his writings set the stage for a European period of innovating logic, ethics, mysticism, and metaphysics.
This 1547 printing of the works of Anselm features his commentary on the Epistles of Paul.

Description:
1578 Letters of Saint Jerome Bible Catholic Church Epistles Plantin Press FOLIO

"When the stomach is full, it is easy to talk of fasting."
– Jerome, Epistle 58

Saint Jerome was a 4th-century, early church father. While he was most known for his translation of the Bible, he also wrote a collection of letters which are now known his 'Epistles.' These letters were written on a variety of topics, but most of them were written as warnings against sin and detestable devices such as sexual immorality within the clergy, clothing advised for virgins, gluttony and fasting, and laboring over Biblical texts. These letters were written to and from important men and women of the church such as Augustine, Theophilus, Heliodorus, and the Popes.
This 16th-century edition was collected and edited by Mariano Vittori and published by the famed Plantin Press. This particular 1578 tome contains the Epistles as well as Jerome's commentary on numerous books of the Bible.

Description:
1668 Idolatry & Pagans BIBLE History Jews Gentiles Vossius + Hebrew Maimonides

Gerardus Vossius was a 16th-century Dutch classical theologian known for being one of the first to treat theological dogmas and non-Christian religions from a historical point of view, rather than the more accepted theological. His works of rhetoric were widely popular and were used as textbooks during and after his lifetime. He followed Aristotelian thought and was influenced not only by Aristotle, but also by Cicero and other ancient philosophers.
Vossius's "De Theologia Gentili" was his commentary on the origins and rise of idolatry throughout history. It gives glimpses into Gentile theologies followed in the Bible. This 1668 edition was published in Amsterdam by Blaeu.

A rare, Benito Arias Montano was a 16th-century Spanish reformer best known for his Polyglot Bible in which he was accused by the Spanish Inquisition of altering the scriptural text from the original Hebrew.
