Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell - 1949

London: Secker and Warburg, 1949. First edition in publisher's light green cloth with the original dustjacket as issued on first publication. The book is in very good condition, the cloth uniformly unworn, a couple of faded spots on the spine where the dustjacket has small chips. Internally no ownership inscriptions with a bookseller's label on the first pastedown for Paris's 'Librairie Galignani', the oldest English bookshop in Europe where this copy was clearly first sold. Otherwise an unmarked copy which is about fine inside. The jacket is in good condition with chips to the head and tail of the spine, a 7 cm closed tear running up the hinge between upper cover and spine of the jacket with a small loss that is level with the words 'eighty-four' on the book's front panel. Tiny ink squiggle half way up the front flap. The publisher's original price of '!0s. net' appears on the front flap. Happily, neither this book nor the dustjacket has not subject to any restoration. More than 70 years since it was first published this extraordinary and prescient novel continues to resonate through our culture.
