London: Edward Arnold, 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. pp. xvi, 267, with 30 photographic plates (many photogravures), a line drawing, and a folding map. Original green cloth binding, with gilt stamping. Mild bumping to the top corners and the tips, internals clean and sound. Henry Algernon George Percy (1871-1909) first visited Turkey and other parts of the near east shortly after his election to Parliament (representing South Kensington) in 1895. He developed a deep interest in and affection for the region, traveling there again in 1897 and recounting his experiences in this book. He visited again in 1899, subsequently writing The Highlands of Asiatic Turkey (1901), in which he began to expound more fully his views on the political situation in the region. He actively promoted an alliance between Germany and Britain over Turkey to promote stability and stem Russian influence (DNB).

Description:
London: Tinsley Brothers, 1863. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes in the rarest binding state (without Burton's name or FRGS on the spines), but with a "second edition" slug on the title pages. This state was apparently unknown to Penzer and was probably the result of an attempt to boost sales by the publisher, as the text is unchanged. Plate of Julu house is the frontispiece to Volume I, and the map (now detached and laid in) is in Volume II. . Both volumes lightly bumped/rubbed, but clean and sound. Small bookplate of F.H. Spencer on each front pastedown. Much to his dismay, Burton's first consular posting landed him on a small, desolate island off the coast of West Africa. He took every opportunity to leave the place, exploring various parts of the mainland and making observations on cultural and traditions, health and sanitary conditions, and slavery, among other things. The account of his journeys into Sierra Leone and Nigeria to investigate stories of gold and gold mining is credited with… Read More

Description:
1689 Thevenot Voyages CHINA Persia IRAQ Ottoman TURCS Islam Egypt Pyramids RARE
Jean de Thévenot was a 17th-century French voyager whose expeditions to the Middle East were extensively recorded in his travel journals. Beginning in 1655, Thevenot traveled throughout the Greek Isles, Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia spending large amounts of time in Palestine, Constantinople, and Egypt. His second voyage, which began in 1663, took him through the Holy Land and Mesopotamia, Persia, as well as through parts of modern-day Iran and Iraq.
It is worth noting though, that early French editions of this work included particular Americana interest, with the first printed account of Marquette and Joliet expeditions. (Sabin 95332).

Earl Percy was also known as Lord Percy or - until 1899 - as Lord Warkworth; he wrote and published the present work under the latter name.Percy first visited parts of Anatolia, or Asia Minor, shortly after his election to Parliament in 1895, he returned in 1897 and wrote the present book on his return to England. In the present book he not only gives detailed descriptions of the places he visits while travelling - from Constantinople through northern Turkey to Mosul, Aleppo and on his return to the west - but also speaks out about the Armenian… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.

Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series, volumes 138 and 139. First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle seventeen embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kins ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. W E D Allen and Anthony… Read More
