The history of China has always been one of the most popular discussions of western culture and was a regular occurring topic of authors from the 16th- 18th-centuries. One of the most important examples of Chinese history was written by Louis Le Comte, a French Jesuit who wrote this work on his mission to China in 1688. This work, 'Nouveau Memoires,' created a huge debate within the Chinese Rites Controversy.

These tomes cover various Chinese empires and kingdoms including the K'ang His and Kangxi, Chinese astrology and star gazing, Zodiac and mythology, Chinese boats, Mandarin costumes, mechanical inventions, and establishment of Christianity in China.

While these contents are important, the most desirable aspect of this book is the section devoted to Confucius and his teaching, along with a rare portrait of Confucius. A highly desirable work with fascinating content that includes full-page and folding engravings!

This valuable set is made even more desirable by the inclusion of a prestigious provenance of the possible book plate of Alexander Hamilton - one of the most important founding fathers of the United States of America. Richard Short's "Of Drinking Water" is a rare, 17th-century treatise on health and well-being in 1600s England. Published in 1656, Short's popular work was written at a time when the majority of drinking water was not safe for most people and was distrusted as a regular drink (Pope). In fact, one of the chapters found in this treatise was called "That our English beer is better then [sic] water". This chapter was not on the taste and preference of the two beverages, but rather on the safety of consuming one over the other. Other topics considered by Short included:

· The virtues of drinking English beer
o "experience that beer is healthful"
· Consuming opium and poppy along with water
