About This Item

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Viking, 2006. First American Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. In an attempt to escape her not-so-innocent past in Glasgow, Bessy Buckley, the wide-eyed Irish heroine of THE OBSERVATIONS, takes a job as a maid in a big house outside Edinburgh working for the beautiful Arabella. Bessy is intrigued by her new employer, but puzzled by her increasingly strange requests and her insistence that Bessy keep a journal of her most intimate thoughts. And it seems that Arabella has a few secrets of her own, including her near-obsessive affection for Nora, a former maid who died in mysterious circumstances. Then, a childish prank has drastic consequences, which throws into jeopardy all that Bessy has come to hold dear. Caught up in a tangle of madness, ghosts, sex and lies, she remains devoted to Arabella. But, who is really responsible for what happened to her predecessor Nora? As her own past threatens to catch up with her and complicate matters even further, Bessy begins to realize that she has not quite landed on her feet. THE OBSERVATIONS was a 2007 nominee for the Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction, which is awarded to the woman who, in the opinion of the judges, has written the best, eligible full-length novel in English. Jane Harris was also shortlisted in the Best Novel category for THE OBSERVATIONS, as Waterstone's Newcomer of the Year. As new, unread copy, in fine, mylar-protected dust jacket. L28

Synopsis

The Observations is a hugely assured and darkly funny debut set in nineteenth-century Scotland. Bessy Buckley, the novel?s heroine, is a cynical, wide-eyed, and tender fifteen-year-old Irish girl who takes a job as a maid in a once-grand country house outside Edinburgh, where all is not as it seems. Asked by her employer, the beautiful Arabella, to keep a journal of her most intimate thoughts, Bessy soon makes a troubling discovery and realizes that she has fled her difficult past only to arrive in an even more disturbing present.

We specialize in collectible, contemporary signed first editions. First edition means the first printing. (Later printings of the first edition are typically not printed on acid-free paper, and should be avoided by collectors.) Signatures are obtained by us in person. Inscribed books sold by us may contain a line, a phrase, or a sketch that the author has chosen to add. Our signed books are not dedicated to anybody in particular (not to your grandmother, your Aunt Gladys, your ex-lover or your former cellmate), except in the rare case of a presentation copy from an author to a noteworthy person. All our books are hardcover, unless the book is an Advance Reading Copy, Uncorrected Proof, or PBO. You can expect that the books we send you will be as described, and in a physical condition worthy of the author’s having signed them. We do not sell remainder-marked books, signed or otherwise
