About This Item

St. Petersburg: self-published (Tipografiia M. M. Stasiulevicha), 1901. Large octavo (25 × 17.5 cm). Publisher's decorative green wrappers preserved in contemporary ochre cloth binding with gilt tooling to front board; [4], 147, [3] pp. With numerous photographs, one reproduction on coated stock, and two folding maps bound at the back. Ownership note of Baron Traubenberg. Binding lightly shaken and rubbed; else about very good. First and only edition. The author, Dmitrii Dubenskii (1858-1923) was a Russian Major General, military writer, and publisher, who published this study abut the Caucasian wars under a pseudonym. The account is based both on his personal experiences and eyewitness accounts and covers the period from the initial Russian conquest of the Caucasus beginning in 1800 (the "heroic era" of conquest according to the author), to the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. With numerous illustrations taken from contemporary publications and works by painters such as Kozlov. The author's true identity is based on a copy held by the Russian State Library. KVK, OCLC only show the copies at Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, NYPL, Kansas, London Library, and Paris BULAC.
