Florence, Italy: L-D Allen Press, The, 1951. Original pink wrappers, front cover titled in black. Celnius Press. 4to. Original pink wrappers, front cover titled in black. unpaginated. Limited to 100 copies. A fine copy. Printed by Lewis and Dorothy Allen as a Christmas keepsake for their friends from their hand press. The type face is Romanée, hand-set; the paper is English hand-made, printed damp; and the cover paper is from the Fabriano mill which is situated not far from Florence. Printed in brown with hand-colored floral decorations to every page by Dorothy Allen.

From the introduction: "This ode, described as the most perfect of English lyrics, illustrates Shelley's superior gift of expression. In 1819 he also composed Prometheus Unbound (cited as the most radiant of all Utopian visions), and The Cenci (greatest of the tragedies since Shakespeare). That these three poems, each taking a supreme place among its own kind, should have been produced by one man and in a single year of his life, is one of the astonishing accomplishments of literary biography.

Newtown, PA: Bird & Bull Press, 1996. cloth, cloth spine label. Bird & Bull Press. 8vo. cloth, cloth spine label. medals portfolio, slipcase. Descriptions by William Blades. Introduction by Henry Morris. Limited to only 120 numbered copies (Berger A58). Printed from Dante types composed by Dan Carr and Julia Ferrari at Golgonooza Letter Foundry. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch printing guilds, which included booksellers, bookbinders, publishers and artists, issued medals to their journeyman members, with the name or number of the member engraved thereon. The medal identified the holder as a qualified guild member, a sort of "union card." All "one-of-a-kind," they are highly prized and extremely difficult to find today. Few Americans have ever seen one. Henry Morris was able to identify the formerly anonymous "No.17" on one of the medals, thus adding considerable interest to what is already a fascinating subject. Due to the high cost of silver and casting, only 120 copies of this book… Read More

This set includes November 20, 1787 (No. 2743); November 21, 1787 (No. 2744); December 1, 1787 (No. 2753); January 23, 1788 (No. 2798); January 26, 1788 (No. 2801); February 2, 1788 (No. 2807); and February 9, 1788 (No. 2813) Each issue with four unnumbered pages, text presented in four columns. The major historical significance, and the unifying theme, of this collection is that it contains the first notices of the publication and marketing of Thomas Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia, the only book length work published by Jefferson. The November 20, 1787, issue includes an announcement by publishers Prichard and Hall that Jefferson's work is "now in the press," and describes its format. The November 21, 1787, issue includes another notice with brief extracts of Jefferson's comments. The issue of December 1 repeats the… Read More

Washington, DC: National Intelligencer and Washington Advertiser, 1807. unbound. folio. unbound. (4), (4), (4), (4) pages. 4 issues. Four consecutive issues of what was, at the time, the official newspaper of the United States government, which published the proceedings and acts of the United States Congress. All four issues in near fine condition. It was edited by Samuel Smith, a loyal ally of Thomas Jefferson. Included in this set are the issues of March 18, 20, 23, and 25. Of special significance is the first printing of the prospectus, by Meriwether Lewis, of his journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition (1804-6). Also in the issue of March 18, preceding the prospectus, is a letter from Lewis warning the public of "several unauthorized and probably some spurious publications" about the expedition "by individuals entirely unknown to me (Lewis)." Lewis noted that permission to publish the journals was granted exclusively to Robert Frazier. Lewis's letter appears once again preceding the… Read More

Description:
Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")

Adams was born to Nathaniel Dickinson Adams and Harriet (Hastings) Adams in Shutesbury, Massachusetts. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read More
