Thick 12mo, 13 x 7.5cm, separately signed and paged with divisional titles, complete: [iv], [1], 78, [xx], [1], 109, [3], 198, [3], 58, [3], 77, [5], 34, [3], 56, [3], 114pp. Vellum boards, edges stained black, faded hand titling on spine, former owner's name and date of 1755 on title. A few marginal stains else clean internally. Second collected edition of Oeuvres Philosophiques de Mr. de La Mettrie, following the London and Berlin Issue of 1751, though this being the first made up of separately signed pieces. Includes: Discours Preliminaire; L'Homme Machine; Traité de L'Ame; Abrégé des Systèmes; Les Animaux plus que Machines; L'Homme Plante; and Anti-Seneque ou Discours sur le Bonheur. Important group of works from the French Materialist philosopher, who also practiced medicine and wrote in both disciplines. Contains his most well known writing, L'Homme Machine, here in the second edition with 1748 Elie Luzac title containing six-line Voltaire quote, and 109 pages (perhaps published as late as 1752). The original publication of 108 pages under the same imprint, was suppressed and destroyed in Leyden, with few copies surviving. This 1752 collection was also reissued in 1753 in two volumes with additions. Stoddard 56 (L'Homme Machine - 31).
