About This Item

1926. unbound. Etching. Signed in pencil. Image measures 8.25" x 10.75". Sheet measures 11.25" x 15.25".<br/><br/> This print provides a lovely view of the Old Mulford House, a colonial farmhouse in Easthampton, basking in the shadow of a tree in the front yard. Hassam has rendered both with a remarkable Impressionist penstroke which appears spontaneous and immediate even in the more enduring medium of etching. By dispersing white spots throughout the shadow, the artist conveys the shadow's flickering impermanence. The print contains the artist's signature and date and is signed again below in pencil. The print is in good condition, with the artist's tack holes at the sheet edges. Childe Hassam (1859-1935) was an American Impressionist painter who lived in New York City. He spent much of his time out on Long Island, where the abundant natural light allowed him to experiment with rendering its reflection in both pen and paint. This beautiful print, an edition of which can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a fine example of Hassam's impressive work.<br/><br/>
