Description:
London: Printed by J. Barfield for Cadell and Davis, and Others, 1800. Octavo. 2nd edition. Volume one. Translated from the French. 379pp., three folding maps, (one very large map has old repair to fold). This is basically a reprint of the 1797 first edition with a few changes and corrections and of course with added maps. He had planned a five volume set over the next couple of years 1800-1801. Bound in full calf, spine flat and decorated in gilt, joints rubbed and somewhat fragile, closed edge tear to last page. Author's note: "It is scarcely necessary to say, that the high price to which paper has lately risen, and the still greater increase of expence, incurred by the addition of the maps, do not permit the price of this volume to be left the same as that of the first edition". A good copy.

Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1969. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Lauren Ford. This interesting little book is excerpted from Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. On 29 December 1938, Churchill wrote to his wife regarding his initial draft about this part of his history: "I have just finished writing about Joan of Arc. I think she is the winner in the whole of French history. The leading women of these days were more forceful and remarkable than the men." Profusely illustrated, this slim volume contains 17 illustrations by the distinguished artist Lauren Ford. Though 16 of these illustrations had previously been published as black and white drawings, this is their first appearance in color. The illustration on the dust jacket front cover and frontispiece is original to this edition. This little-known edition is scarce and thus missing from many collections. Many of the copies that do come on the market are ex-library with attendant flaws, very often including library stickers or…

First printed edition of these minutes by the Foreign Ministry of France in 1897-1898 on Bahr Al-Ghazal, Lake Chad, and the Upper Nile regions. The tensions between French and British relations were high in the 1875-1898 era. especially over Egyptian and African issues. At several points, these issues brought the two nations to the brink of war; but the situation was always defused diplomatically. For two decades, there was peace-but it was "an armed peace, characterized by alarms, distrust, rancor, and irritation." During the Scramble for Africa in the 1880s, the British and French generally recognized each other's spheres of influence. In an agreement in 1890, Great Britain was recognized in Bahr-el-Ghazal and Darfur, while Wadai, Bagirmi, Kanem, and the territory to the north and east…

The writer has spared no pains in consulting the best authorities on both sides of the great controversy of which Puritanism was the result. He can conscientiously present the history to the public as authentic; and he hopes it will not be condemned by any intelligent and candid reader as wanting in fairness towards the opponents of the Puritans."Condition:Some rubbing and light scratches to the marbled boards; scuffs to…

The Folio Society, 2000. Hardcover . Must-Have. Would 100% gift this book! It's in great used book condition, with only the barest of shelfwear on the edges. In slipcase, which has minor wear and an unfortunate paint line on the back - easily hidden against the back of a bookcase! All books on our shelves are good condition - lightly read or worn - unless otherwise indicated. The Bluestocking Bookshop provides high-quality used and new books and gift items at deep discounts.
