Each plate with the title printed below the border. 95 line illustrations throughout, some full page. Previous owners neat name on front blank endpaper otherwise a fine copy in original burgundy cloth with gilt illustrations and lettering to front board and spine. Front board with quadruple ruled black borders, spine ruled in gilt. In the scarce original publshers dustwrapper with colour illustration mounted onto the front panel, below black lettering and four line border. Flaps and other panels lettered in black. Original printed price (15/-) on spine has been blacked out neatly. Aside from a couple of tiny chips to the wrapper this is a beautiful fine example of this well produced edition. Scarce in this condition.:

Text and images were printed using photopolymer plates and reduction linoleum blocks. Fonts are Optima Bold and Gill Sans Light. Handbound in quarter-cloth with cover paper of handmade walnut dyed flax. 3.5 x 3.5" illustration inset of quilted papers, which were designed with the artist's mother. Suzanne Sawyer: "The legacy of quilting is ubiquitous in American history, so much so that it has lost some of the meaning it once held. Very good with some chipping and tears to the very fragile ( vellum ? ) cover papers. Fortunately, none of this extends into either the front or back illustrations. Internally very bright and clean. Vivid en pochoir Illustrations ( Highly refined stencil technique ). 20 in all, including the 2 covers, 13 individual plates, and 5 more in the folding supplement. One of the plates is missing, but seems to have been replaced by the one from the Feb. issue of the same year. 3 other four page illustrated sections with subjects ....Les Elegances de la Scene / Les Tailleurs Fantasie and Robes Legere. 2 pages of ads, and 2 pages with "description of our figures"..

Fine example of Riviere and Son binding in exceptional condition (see image). Full deep red morocco with gilt rule to boards; 5 raised bands and intricate gilt detailing to spine. Gilt ruled edges; intricate inner dentelles; all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece (with tissue guard) and 15 aquatint hors-texte plates throughout. Includes an advertisement page after title page stating this book would have been released earlier, but "impediments" and the plates delayed its release. There is also included a section for Notes and Errata. Without previous owners' names or other markings. 259 pp., [1]. 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches.
