NY and Bogota: Harper & Row, Knopf, LEC, Grupo Editorial Norma (1968-2005)., 1968. Gabriel Garcia Marquez Collection. 16 First editions all INSCRIBED: An outstanding collection of 16 first editions of the Nobel Laureate all variously INSCRIBED to the collector, Richard Mattie by Garcia Marquez. No One Writes to the Colonel and Other Stories; One Hundred Years of Solitude; Innocent Erendira; In Evil Hour; Chronicle of a Death Foretold; The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor; Clandestine in Chile; Love in the Time of Cholera; The General in His Labyrinth; Strange Pilgrims; Love and Other Demons; News of a Kidnapping; Living to Tell the Tale; Memories of My Melancholy Whores; Vivir para contarla; One Hundred Years of Solitude LEC. This collection was put together by the highly resourceful Richard Mattie between the years of 1997 and 2005 with the assistance of a number of contacts in Mexico who had close connection with Garcia Marquez. All 16 books are personally inscribed to Mattie by Garcia Marquez, and, noteworthy, the copy of the LEC of One Hundred Years of Solitude is inscribed in English, "To Richard, from his Friend." and is signed and dated 1998. Garcia Marquez rarely inscribed in English. Mattie said that Garcia Marquez commented that this was the first time he signed this book. All the books are first American editions with the exception of Vivir para cotarla which is the true first in Spanish, the Columbian edition published by Grupo Editorial Norma, Bogota, 2002. As every serious Garcia Marquez collectors fully knows, there are a great many highly suspect "signed" Garcia Marquez books on the internet and purchasing any without impeccable, serious provenance is a risky venture at best. Mattie was so diligent in his documentation that he kept every letter, fax, postal receipt, wire, and email (all printed out fully) from this close to 9 year difficult collecting venture. This 1" thick folder, entitled by Mattie "The Gabriel Garcia Marquez File 1997-2005" is included with this collection. Never have I seen such minutely detailed provenance. As a collection of inscribed Garcia Marquez titles in English translation, this is as close to a sine qua non statement as a contemporary collector might hope to come. All the books from Chronicle of a Death Foretold forward through Memories of My Melancholy Whores are tight, fine books in bright, fine DJs with the exception of Strange Pilgrims which has slight cloth discoloration at the base of the book. No One Writes to the Colonel has a partial name erasure top of the front free endpaper and some top edge foxing, else very good plus in a bright first issue DJ with a minuscule closed tear bottom of front panel else fine. One Hundred Years of Solitude is the first edition book in the first issue DJ with an exclamation mark at the end of the first front flap paragraph. There is a small contemporary inscription dated 1970 top of the half-title page in Spanish. The book has light cloth wear at the extremities else tight, very good plus in a very good plus price-intact DJ ($7.95) with some old tape residue verso of the jacket at the crown of the spine; the DJ has shallow edge wear, light rubbing and a tiny edge tear or two.. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process.
