Altadena, CA: November 23, 1943., 1943.. Very good. - Original sketch penned in black ink on a 5-3/4 inch high by 3-3/8 inch wide cream-colored card of the head of comic-strip character Joe Jinks titled below the image "Hi, There! --Best Wishes from Joe Jinks". Signed in capital letters "And Henry Formhals". Together with a mailing envelope addressed in Formhals' hand. The card is near fine.

The sketch portrays Joe Jinks with wide eyes, wayward tufts of hair, a bulbous nose and a toothbrush mustache; he is smoking a cigar. The envelope is addressed to James A. Bowman, a teacher who collected autographed items for his class. Formhals has crossed out the Los Angeles return address on his personalized envelope and written in an Altadena address.

Henry Formhals [1908-1981] was an American cartoonist best known for his work on the comic strip "Freckles and His Friends", beginning in 1935. From the early 1940s until 1953 he also worked on the "Joe Jinks" comic strip.
