[Paris: Schmied, Francois-Louis, 1918. Original woodcut (13.3 x 10.2 cm plus ample margins). Printed in black on light gray paper. A fine example, neatly matted. Impression #30 of fifty, numbered and signed by the artist in the lower margin. This print appeared in the very rare series, LES CENT FRONTISPEICES, published by Schmied in ten fascicles ca. 1918. According to notes on the mat, this design was produced as a frontis for an edition of Huysman's LA CATHÉDRALE, although neither Monod nor Talvart & Place record a likely edition. Welsch (1889 - 1954) was a skilled painter and printmaker allied with the May group. His earliest solo book illustration commission is reported to have been LES BOURGEOIS DE WITZHEIM by André Maurois. BENEZIT XIV:777.

Paris: Imp. Lemercier [for:] Librairie Nouvelle, [nd. but ca. 1850s].. 19 plates and 18 plates. Loose sheets. Images, including captions, ca. 27 x 18.5 cm. Margins vary. Some creasing to the larger margins, two plates exhibit foxing and a couple more show some slight marginal tanning, otherwise very good or better. Decent representation of two of the sub- elements of Gavarni's extended work, which when completed, included 329 lithographic plates. The first element lacks plate 1 of the twenty published, and the second lacks plates 4 and 5 of twenty published (duplicates of 2 and 7 are also present, but not included in the count above). Ray treats the series at some length, describing Thomas Virelogue as "one of Gavarni's most brilliant inspirations," and the work as a whole as "a neglected masterpiece of nineteenth-century French graphic art."
