New York: Printed and published by the author (Frank Harris), 1916. 8vo. 2 volumes. Presentation copy from the Frank Harris to the dancer Maud Allan. Allan danced the role of Salome in Dance of the Seven Veils, and was at the centre of a famous libel trial in 1918. Arch Conservative MP Noel Pemberton Billing implied she was a lesbian and a sadist (as well as a follower of Wilde!) in an article in his magazine Vigilante entitled 'The Cult of the Clitoris'. She sued and lost, partly because of Billing's claim that there was a sexually perverse pro German Fifth Column in England that was compromising possible peace for a war weary England. Her brother had also been convicted in America of murder, and it was implied that her family was morally degenerate. Disappointingly, Lord Alfred Douglas had testified in Billings favour. Recent full green morocco binding. Very good copy, with one leaf professionally repaired. TOGETHER WITH; KETTLE, Michael - Salome's Last Veil - The Libel Case of the Century - Granada 1977. & Wilde's Last Stand. Decadence, Conspiracy & The First World War. Duckworth 1997. These titles cover the trial. . Very Good. Full Morocco. First Edition. 1916.

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
