- Bull, Norma. "Rare Souvenir catalogue, dated 1949. The "Two Hemispheres: Britain Through Australian Eyes 1939-1947" by Norma Bull, Melbourne Town Hall. Monday, 16th to Saturday, 28th May, 1949. Official Opening by Rear Admiral C.T. Pizey, C.B. D.S.O. Souvenir Programme 2/-. Norma Bull was a painter, an etcher and an art teacher. Born in Melbourne in September 1906 she was the daughter of Dr R.J. Bull. She began her career in 1929 at the National Gallery School. In 1938 she was awarded the Sir John Longstaff Scholarship in Fine Art and moved to England in 1939 to study at the Royal Academy in London. At the outbreak of war, she applied to become a war artist. In 1941, she was given a sketching permit by the War Artists Advisory Committee to record bomb damage in the Bristol area. Her sketches represent an important historical record of life in England during the war years. The Exhibition of her Paintings of Wartime Britain was opened in London in 1947 by John Masefield, OM, Poet Laureate on November 4th and visited by Her Majesty The Queen on December 4th, 1947 at Australia House, London. The Queen bought nine of her paintings, which remain in the Royal Collection today. The Two Hemispheres exhibition toured Australia in 1949. Norma Bull returned to live in Australia and continued painting for many more years. She died in 1980. Soft wraps. Internally very good clean and tight but the front and back covers are somewhat foxed. Please see photos. Plates include Rescue, which is 'In the possession of Her Majesty the Queen', the Dandenongs, also in the Queen's Collection, The Old Mill, Tasmania, Effigies of Crusaders, lent by the Imperial War Museum, London, The Harbour Train Runs to Schedule........etc. There is also a photo of the artist with Her Majesty The Queen. 23 pps.
