New York: Something Else Press, 1964. Oblong 4to (22 x 27 cm). Original cloth; pictorial dust jacket. Jacket tanned with a small chip to the top of the front panel. Boards a bit bowed. Else near fine. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED by Johnson to friend and art critic Suzi Gablik with a small drawing of an arrow piercing a heart that has the word "Love" written inside.

AN EXCEPTIONAL BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLEGE ASSOCIATION: friends since their time together at the school, Gablik was largely responsible for first exposing Johnson's work to a wider audience. In the autumn of 1955, she brought Elisabeth Novick to photograph the installation of dozens of Johnson's moticos, photographs that appeared in the inaugural issue of THE VILLAGE VOICE that October. In Gablik's seminal book POP ART REDEFINED (1969), she recalled that event: "The random arrangement [...] on a dilapidated cellar door in Lower Manhattan may even have been the first informal Happening." Gablik continued to champion Johnson's work throughout her career and they remained close until the artist's untimely death in 1995. We have located no other inscribed copies of this book, especially to an important association.

Description:
A fine archive of three original drawings by the English "mouth artist" John Carter, two letters by his biographer, a copy of the revised edition of Carter's Memoir, and related materials. A fine collection of three original drawings by John Carter (31 July 1815 - 2 June 1850), an English mouth artist, together with a memoir and two autograph letters discussing Carter's work by William James Dampier, Carter's first biographer. The collection also includes a heliotype after a drawing by Carter as well as a list of subscribers to Dampier's memoir. The small collection was apparently presented by Dampier to one of his friends. Original drawings by carter are rare, as most "of his work, now widely dispersed and probably unrecognized, is of course only known from nineteenth century reproductions" (Trevor Disley) John Carter was born in Coggeshall, Essex, "of humble parents", as Dampier notes. At school "he showed a disposition to scribble the figure of a man, a horse, or a bird, upon his desk or copy… Read More

Description:
A very good run of the first five volumes from the New Series of this very rare botanical.

Complete with 240 handcoloured botanical plates by Worthington George Smith (212) and Frederick William Burbidge (28)

Flowers include many species of elegant orchids, roses, camellias, dahlias, hyacinths, rhododendrons, pansies, geraniums, and many other popular Victorian garden flowers.

Bernard Quaritch in a General Catalogue of Books in 1874 praises the series for its "beautifully coloured plates" and notes it was already "very scarce."

Five volumes edited by Henry Honywood Dombrain (1,2), Worthington George Smith (3,4) and Frederick William Burbidge (5), published from 1872 to 1876. (Volumes 11 to 15 in the complete series).

The Floral Magazine launched in 1861 and introduced exotic flowers from tropical lands as well as hybrids raised in British nurseries. The lithographic plates were dynamic, full-page botanical illustrations in large format Royal or Imperial Octavo size. Unlike the French and… Read More

Foujita. The menu is also signed by Madeleine, Foujita's model and companion during this two-year journey in Latin America and by the Argentine artist Florencio Molina Campos, who added a small sketch of Foujita. Together with a group of two vintage silver gelatin photographs mounted on cardboard. The mounts measure 33.5 cm x 26.5 and the images 23 x 17 cm. These two pictures were taken at the event on April 30, 1932. One photograph shows Foujita dancing with Madeleine, the other shows them at the dinner in his honor. The other guests include Molina Campos and Guichard Jean du Plessis, author of "Hommes de la Pampa", accompanied by his wife Simone, a relative of the aviator Jules Védrines. The most successful of the Montparnasse group of artists, Tokyo-born Foujita's Latin American tour (1931-1933) was a great hit, with thousands of people attending his exhibitions. In 1933 he returned to Japan, where Madeleine died from an overdose in 1936. In Japan Foujita produced propaganda art during the war,… Read More

It is in a prologue, three acts, and an epilogue by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov to a libretto by Vladimir Nikolayevich Bel'sky after the eponymous imitation folk tale in verse by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, based in turn on 'The House of the Weathercock' and 'Legend of the Arabian Astrologer' from The Alhambra by Washington Irving. Description:
Sydney: Art in Australia, 1920. A beautiful copy of Lindsay's famous work covering the meaning of life and art, drawing on philosophical concepts. Signed on front endpaper by Lindsay with a full page original etching tipped in "All who would examine the problem of Life must first remove from it the problem of Existence. It is the confusion between these two things that has confused all human morality. By Existence one comprehends the body, and all that serves to supply its needs, to keep its machinery active. By Life one understands all that goes beyond the body, the impulse that we vaguely call the mind, the soul, the intellectual process. The body is the poor relation of the mind, the servant, the vehicle. In serving its needs, one supplies movement; in servings its senses, one supplies material for the intellectual process. Between these functions, high and low, one must seek a direction for Man's destiny. To find that direction is to find the High Morality. In short, to find the direction of… Read More

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
