London, 1723. London: Printed by T. W. for D. Browne (and others), 1723. Folio, early calf, nicely rebacked with early 20th century calf, crimson leather spine label. Title page in red and black, copperplate portrait, forty copperplates and several engraved head and tail pieces. Originally published in Paris in 1650, the first English translation by Evelyn was in 1664. This, the third English edition, is the first to include Wotton’s Elements which is considered to be the first British architectural book. An enthusiast for classical art and architecture who traveled to Rome, Fréart wrote this comparative study, which was then translated by John Evelyn in an attempt to improve the architecture of London.
