Lisbon: Candido Chaves, 1900-1907. Quartos (33 × 23.5d cm). Somewhat later red half calf over patterned boards; titles to spine; preserving most outer wrappers; ca. 8 pp. per issue. Nearly each issue with a chromolithographed double-page caricature and two full-page illustrations or cartoons. Occasional minor tears; a few issues with toning to margins; first issue in its second edition; overall very good. Altogether 167 issues (of 191 issues published in the complete run) of the strikingly illustrated satirical journal from turn-of-the-twentieth-century Lisbon, founded by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, each issue illustrated by Pinheiro and his son, Manuel Gustavo (1867-1920), with vividly colorful illustrations and cartoons on topics including local culture, politics, and international affairs.

Published from January 1900 through June 1907. Following the absorption of A Comedia Portugueza in January of 1903, the title was changed to: Parodia, Comedia Portugueza. In 1905, it was further modified to: Parodia, Fundador Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro.

Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro (1846-1905) was the most important nineteenth-century Portuguese caricaturist. A classically trained artist, he spent some time in Brazil and is one of the earliest Europeans to use speech bubbles in cartoons. A number of his illustrations touch on themes related to the Portuguese Colonial Empire, with several of them trading in highly stereotypical and derogatory depictions of Africans and other colonial subjects (see also several references to Pinheiro in: Imperial Migrations: Colonial Communities and Diaspora in the Portuguese World, 2012).
