About This Item
Hardback. Fair. For A Mosely, London, 1676; 8vo, pp [xx], 320; full calf, covers badly worn or with parts missing on the corners and by the spine, two ties broken and the front board weak and somewhat loose in consequence; part of the title page is missing and has been carefully repaired with old paper, the missing text having then been added in ink in approximation of the type; there are similar small repairs on two other early sheets but without loss of any text. Blank opening leaf absent but with the engraved emblematic frontispiece facing the prologue present. First published in English in 1647, the work is a fine translation of a famous Italian pastoral work. Fanshawe was a royalist, siding with Charles during the civil war and subsequently held various royal and diplomatic appointments. He translated the Lusiad of Camoens from the Portuguese and was known also as a speaker of Spanish.
