New York: The John Day Company, 1939. Hardcover. 8vo. Light brown cloth with gilt lettering and blind-embossed decoration, pictorial dust jacket. 372pp. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear, with several tiny edge chips. A tight, attractive first edition of the eighth novel from the Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winner (1892-1973) -- and handsomely signed by her in full in blue ink on an inner flyleaf. Interestingly, neatly tipped to the front flyleaf is a very good first edition of Richard John Walsh's uncommon "A Biographical Sketch of Pearl S. Buck" (New York: John Day, [1936]), a small 8vo 28-page promotional booklet about Buck in brown wrappers. Near fine. Inside front wrapper bears the inked ownership signature of noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93).

Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process.
