Chicago, IL: May 13, 1944., 1944.. Very good. - Pen-and-ink drawing of his "Colonel McCosmic" cartoon character on an approximately 3-1/2 inch high by 2-3/8 inch wide piece of cream colored card, signed "Cecil Jensen" below the image. Together with a Chicago Daily News enveloped signed "Cecil Jensen" above the paper's printed address. Near fine.

The envelope is addressed to James A. Bowman, a teacher who collected autographed items for his class. The cartoon, a caricature of Chicago Tribune publisher Colonel McCormick, is the American counterpart of England's Colonel Blimp. The head-and-shoulders cartoon portrait is characterized by a pudding-bowl hat, eyeglasses, whiskers and a very large chin.

American cartoonist Cecil Jensen [1902-1976] studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. He moved to California and worked at The Los Angeles Illustrated Daily News, eventually as an editorial cartoonist. In 1928 he returned to Chicago where he was the editorial cartoonist at The Chicago Daily News, His Colonel McCosmic cartoons were published during World War Ii. After the war he started the comic strips Syncopating Sue and Elmo and Debbie. The latter was renamed "Little Debbie" and became its most popular title, running until 1962.
