Butler Manufacturing was founded by Emanuel Norquist and Charles Butler to build durable preassembled tanks that wouldn't rust or leak. By 1910, they sold their first metal building, and by 1940 they had developed a complete line of rigid-frame pre-engineered buildings. These buildings had more usable interior space, looked better, used less steel, and could be fabricated and built faster with less people. The collection of businesses displayed in these photographs utilizing Butler buildings varies widely. Some of the companies or associations included in Missouri and Illinois are the Alpha Brass Foundry, the Anheuser Rambler Company, the Belleville Car Wash, Coca Cola Bottling, Cherokee Candy Company, Chatham Bible Church, Continental Bank, Church's Fried Chicken, Dellwood Bowl, Ford Steel Company, Florissant Valley Community College, Gushleff Distributing, Goelz Hall, Hundley Pontiac, Immerfrost Ice Skating Rink, Jeremiah's of Cuba, Johnson's Service Station, Lee Rowan & Co., Murdock Beer Distributors, O'Fallon Bowl, Oberjuerge Rubber, Royal Crown Bottling Co., St. John's Lutheran School, St. Clair County Fair, Tobey's Drive-In, and many others. A notable architectural archive from a long-standing landmark American Midwest manufacturing firm.
