  • Hardcover
Philadelphia: Carey & Lea, 1832. Two volumes. 12mo (signed in sixes). 284 and 327 pages. Edges untrimmed. Original quarter cloth over boards with printed paper spine labels. [19.5 cm.] Most of spine label lost on first volume; label on second volume a little chipped, but lettering is largely intact. Else a good set. Extremities worn with small losses to cloth. Some spotting to boards. Front hinge of vol. I started internally, but sound. Piece torn from the front free endpaper and the front flyleaf of second volume (about three centimeters deep). Vol. I shows some light damping to gutters near the front and small ink spot to several pages, affecting a couple of letters with no impact on comprehension. Scattered moderate foxing; leaves a little tanned at edges. Early edition, printed within a decade of the first (New York, 1823). Preceded by about seven American editions. Not in BAL. American Imprints 11987.

Description:
New York: Charles Wiley, 1823. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Rebound as two volumes in one in brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. xi, 275pp; 329pp. Overall very good. Modern rebind is pristine and fine, while text block is moderately age toned and sporatically foxed throughout; small contemporary ownership signature at top of first volume title page. A tight and fairly attractive first edition, first state, of this uncredited ("By the Author of 'Precaution'") historical novel and the first of the five "Leatherstocking Tales." Proper first state points present ("E.B. Clayton, Printer" cited on both title pages). Though rebound as a single volume and priced accordingly, this is a decent, quite handleable first edition of this scarce early title. American Imprints 12254. BAL 3829. WRIGHT I 671.
