Nikolai Yevstafyevich Slavinsky (1839–1918) – Russian author, editor and historian. He was a founder and director of the Postal and Telegraph Museum in St. Petersburg, which he managed for 24 years. He contributed to the Russian literature created his "Letters about America" book.
Author went to the United States at the age of 30. He lived there around one year. Slavinsky recorded all his impressions exclusively for his friends and relatives but later they convinced him to publish his notes. Notes were published in the journal "Otechestvennie zapiski". A book was published later in 1831.
The author describes the life of America. Book delivers a wide scope of themes with focus on the Russian emigrants of the "zero" wave. Slavinsky provides a lot of interesting and useful information like everyday life, local habits, customs, trade, politics, the police and crime, and much more, delivered in a lively and fascinating manner.
