London: Smith Elder and Co., 1846 (i.e. 1848) Small octavo (17 cm x 10.5 cm), pp. iv, 165 + 1 leaf of adverts. Original olive ribbed cloth with elaborate blind-stamped frame enclosing a blind-stamped harp to both upper and lower covers, gilt spine lettering, cancelled title-page, without the errata slip or publisher's catalogue, binder's ticket of "Westleys & Co" to rear pastedown. The first edition of 1,000 was originally published by Aylott & Jones in 1846 and except for 39 copies, did not sell. In 1847, after the success of Jane Eyre, Smith Elder purchased the remaining unsold sheets. Aside from the cancelled title-page bearing their imprint (and the 1846 date), there were no textual changes. Spine faded to tan, along with the top edge, fore-edge and spine-edge of the covers, stain to upper cover with a splash stain to lower cover, corners a bit soft, spine rubbed at head & heel with spine ends started. Ink inscription to front free endpaper, "To Miss A. Talbot, Your voyage on SS Beaverburn." Also contains the signature of J.B. Smith (John Bisset Smith), Captain, in the late 1940's of the SS Beaverburn. Ink inscription at the head of the title-page "Sent me by dearest Georgy when he was away" signed "Emily G.E. Newcomb, Halberton, Nov. 1858." She was the wife of Rev. Charles George Newcomb, Vicar of Halberton, Devon. Overall, a lovely little copy of the first appearance in print of any of the Bronte sisters. . First Edition, Second Issue. Hardcover. Very Good.

Description:
Oxford: Thos. Shrimpton and Son, 1878. First edition. First edition. 12mo. 16pp. Original grey-green printed wrappers. Exceedingly scarce first edition with the publisher's printed crest appearing on the cover of the wrappers as well as on the title page and a vignette woodcut appears on the last page. The prestigious Newdigate Prize, Oxford's top award for poetry, dates to early 1800's and the winner for 1878 was the young Oscar Wilde. The pamphlet was issued in the same year, as was common with many of the early prize winners, and is considered Wilde's first publication in book form. He worked on the poem a few years earlier while touring Greece as a student at Oxford. An exemplary copy, with no wrinkling or central creases as was commonly seen from folding to place in a pocket. Very small nick out of two corners, very slight (barely detectable) browning to covers, else extremely clean and bright. 16pp.

Description:
1499 Mantuanus Poetry + 1507 Satires of Persius Post-Incunable Satyrae ROME Roce Along with Juvenal, Persius was one of the greatest 1st century Roman satirists. His works consisted of elements of stoicism and were greatly influenced by Horace and Juvenal, in fact the satires of both Juvenal and Persius are often found published together. In his 'Satires', Persius sought a few major philosophical ideas:
·
important questions to ask the gods
·
the meaning of life
·
the importance of gaining knowledge
·
freedom through Stoicism
·
the proper use of money
This 1507 post-incunable printing of Persius's 'Satyrae' was published in Paris by Jean Barbier and Denis Roce. This edition was edited by Giovanni Britannico, a 15th-century grammarian who is best known for his edition of Persius.
This book is bound with another early Roce printing of Baptista Mantuanus poetry. Mantuanus was a Carmelite poet whose 15th-century works were influential during the Protestant… Read More

Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows

It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions…
