Mild edgewear and bit of rubbing/light soiling to binding; light even age toning throughout. Overall a tight, clean, nice third edition of this verse collection (with front board and spine gilt bright) in which Sigourney takes a Biblical line and uses it as the inspiration for a poem -- one for every day of the year, January 1st through December 31st. This particular copy was likely a prize for a school contest, for an inner flyleaf has been inscribed and signed large and bold in brown ink by the author (though recipient's name has been filled in by another hand): "Presented to / Andrew Sherratt / for excellence in Reading / with the good wishes of his friend, / L.H. Boston: Little, Brown and Company and James R. Osgood and Company, 1865. Hardcover. Complete 3-volume set. 16mo. Quarter calf with raised bands, gilt spine lettering and decorations and red marbled paper over boards. xli, 300pp; vii, 311pp; viii, 339pp. Frontispiece (Volume I), marbled edges and endpapers. Very good. Faintest bit of edgewear to binding (only), though internally near fine. A tight and most handsome later printing of this trilogy, part of this publisher's (and later James R. Osgood & Company's) "British Poets" series, so stamped at head of spine. From the library of Wisconsin civic leader JAMES M. LYNCH, chief clerk at the Adjutant General's Office during the Civil War, appointed quartermaster general in 1865; his pencilled signature and date (June 1, 1872) appears on an inner flyleaf of the first volume.

The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two?
