London: Printed for Thomas Carnan, successor to Mr. J. Newbery, 1788. [2],vi,[7]-281,[3]pp. 32mo. Old open sewn boards, worn and chipped. Light brown discoloration in upper quadrant toward gutter receding to nothing by p.85, small chip at lower forecorner of p.231/2 taking a few letters, two small ink names in upper fore-quadrant of the title; a fair to good copy of an uncommon book. Denoted the fifth edition, first published in 1746 under a slightly variant title as volume VII of THE CIRCLE OF THE SCIENCES ...; subsequent editions were published as volume IV of the series' later counterparts. At times, volumes (or parts of volumes) dedicated to Arithmetic, Rhetoric, Writing, Chronology, Geography and Logic were included in the series. ESTC locates only the BL copy of the 1746 edition, and eight copies of this edition - 5 of them in North America. COPAC locates two copies in the UK. Goldsmith is said to have contributed occasionally to the series. ESTC N40496. OSBORNE, pp. 133/4 (3rd edition of 1769).
