  • Used
13 numbered etched plates by Clément-Pierre Marillier after Charles Germain de Saint-Aubin, all beautifully handcoloured, published in two suites the first comprising 7 plates, the second 6 plates. Loosely contained in cont. yellow brushed stiff wrappers. Folio (435 x 315 mm).

Guilmard, p. 211 (no date); Berlin Cat. 5297 (no date); Émile Dacier. Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (1929), vol. I, 12. First edition, etchings in subtle yet brilliant contemporary coloring show highly imaginative initals and monograms. Slight soiling to margins and a few short tears in front margins of plates, but not touching platemarks, a beautiful flower ABC. "For more than two centuries, from the end of the seventeenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth, the Saint-Aubin family constituted a veritable dynasty of embroiderers, engravers and artists serving the French monarchy. Charles Germain de Saint-Aubin (1721-1786), was the eldest son of the Brodeur du Roy, Gabriel Germain, and himself became 'Dessinateur du Roy pour la broderie et la dentelle' to Louis XV. … Other works by Charles Germain at Oak Spring, such as "L'art du brodeur" and "Premier recueil de chiffres" both pulished in Paris in 1770 (!) confirm that he was one of the most celebrated floral decorators of his time, …" (Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi. An Oak Spring Flora, pp. 240-245).

Ahmed Kamil Akdik is one of the last great Ottoman calligraphers. Born in the Fındıklı neighborhood of Istanbul in 1861, Ahmed Kâmil displayed an interest in the art of calligraphy from his earliest years in primary school. In 1879 he began to study thuluth (sülüs) and naskhi (nesih) scripts with the most renowned calligrapher of the era, Sami Efendi (1838-1912), and after earning his certificate in 1884 with the approval of Şevki Efendi, he became one of the foremost Ottoman calligraphers. His certificate (icazet) is preserved in the Library of the Topkapı Palace Museum.
After beginning to work for the Divan-ı Hümayun (the Ottoman Imperial Council) in 1894, he learned from his teacher Sami Efendi the divani and celi divani scripts, as well as the inscription of the tuÄŸra, or imperial monogram, and replaced his teacher… Read More

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
