Offsetting from the engraving to the blank leaf opposite, and very faintly to the title page. Some staining to the bottom of the pages in the last third of the book, all in Northanger Abbey, the text of Pride and Prejudice is not affected and is clean and bright. Some creasing to the bottom corner of the first few pages. Publishers original tan cloth binding with decorative blind stamped decoration to the spine and both boards. Spine lettered in gilt, but this has dulled, although the lettering is still readable. Corners bumped and the edges rubbed and a few marks to the cloth. Overall this is a good copy of a fragile book. A rare survivor. Copies in the publishers original binding rarely turn up on the market, and even less so in nice condition. ----- Apart from the very rare 1816 edition of Emma, Austen's books were first published in America as late as 1832-33 by Carey and Lea in Philadelphia. This is the earliest separate American edition listed by Keynes in his Bibliography of Jane Austen (#74). A rare edition. ----- More photos available on request.
