About This Item

London: Thomas Tegg, 1825. Hardcover. Very good condition. ... the difficulties and the delicacies which attend the practice of riding in Ladies, have long appeared to the writer to render such a work more necessary for them, than for Gentlemen." (v). With many engravings of women riding side-saddle, including cantering, which given that they are wearing full length heavy gowns, is quite a feat! Riding astride for women did not become socially acceptable until the early 20th century, after the invention of a safety skirt which finally prevented women from being trapped by their skirts and dragged by their horses when they fell. Engravings by Davenport, magnificent copper engraved plates. Tall 8vo, 192pp. Original brown papered boards, spine lacking. Pages bright and fresh.
