About This Item

Lausanne,Switzerland: Theatre Vaudois, [1920]., [1920].. Good. - Tall octavo [9-1/2 inches high by 6-1/4 inches wide], bound in pictorial cream-colored self-wrappers. [8] pages. Illustrated with black-and-white photographic portraits and pictorial ads. The top inner corners of the pages are creased & there is staining to their bottom edges. The program has been folded once. Good.

The Theatre Vaudois was founded in 1915 by comedian and playwright Marius Chamot [1880-1937] who had already had considerable success with his comedies at the Theatre du Peuple and La Muse in Lausanne. With Auguste Huguenin as director, Gustave Waldner as composer and a company of actors, his theatre created more then twenty-five productions over twenty years. These were light comedies, mocking the minor travails of peasants and mountain people shown in their natural surroundings and speaking their regional dialect. His work appealed to a huge audience, both to city and country people.

Chamot created the role "Jean-Louis Baillet, agriculteur" as listed in this program, and his portrait appears on the title page. The contents include a portrait of each of the actors, extracts from reviews, a photo of a dance scene from the play, and numerous ads. The date "7 Jan. 1920" is penned on the title page, probably by a theatre-goer.

The text is in French.
