FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE 1876, 4to, approximately 270 x 215 mm, 10½ x 8½ inches, Two chromolithograph plates by John Day of watercolours after James Poole, six thick cards displaying 2 completed flies and 23 flies with dressing materials displayed in 22 sunken mounts, title page printed in red and black, pages: xiii, [4], 1-91, text and mounts within 2 red borders, attractively bound in half green crushed morocco, matching cloth covers, gilt lettering, gilt rules and gilt flies between raised bands to spine, gilt rules to covers, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Slight rubbing to spine, pale age-browning to title page, pale foxing to 15 pages and to most of the boards holding the flies, plus small brown spot to 1 lower margin, small neat repair to 1 inner margin of text at rear, almost invisible, pale offset to text from the sunken cut outs holding the flies, vertical tear to upper wing of the last fly, but no loss. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1931. First Edition. Thick Quarto. First printing with (I-F) code. Grey consider the fishes of the South Seas to be the most fiercest in the world. He tells his stories of the tuna, sailfish, the wahoo and swordfish which would make any fisherman envious. Mr. Grey caught a 618 poind Silver Marlin, apparently a new species at the time and he tells of the fight of 1040 pound Striped Marlin and includes a photo of this incredibly huge fish along with 48 other photographs taken by the author. A fine bright opy bound in green coth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, pictorial endpapers, in unclipped pictorial dust jacket with wear along the top edges, a piece torn away at head and small tear slong bottom of front panel. Internally fresh without foxing, no names or plates.

London: John B. Day, 1876. Quarto. 2 chromolithographed plates, 2 completed flies and 23 flies with dressing materials displayed in 22 sunken mounts on six cards. Extra-illustrated with an albumen photograph of the author signed "Yours faithfully, W.H. Aldam." (mounted on verso of the dedication leaf). Publisher's green cloth, elaborately blocked in gilt and black First edition, second issue: extra-illustrated with a signed photograph by Aldam. The manuscript upon which Aldam based his text appeared at auction in 1999; the author's name was revealed to be Robert Whitehead, but nothing further of the author is known. Both issues of this scarce work bear the date 1876 on the spine; a very few are recorded with a title page date of 1875, but it appears that no copies were actually sold until the Spring of 1876. The manuscript upon which Aldam based his text appeared at auction in 1999; the author's name was revealed to be Robert Whitehead, but nothing further of the author is known. Both issues of this scarce work bear the date 1876 on the spine; a very few are recorded with a title page date of 1875, but it appears that no copies were actually sold until the Spring of 1876.
