Description:
Croydon: The London Electric Firm, 1920. Softcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 12". [38]pp. Cord tied printed flexible card wrappers. Light stains on the wrappers, one leaf has pulled loose, else near fine. Trade catalog for nautical, ground, and aviation searchlights. On the rectos of each leaf is a large photograph in color of a searchlight (on a few pages two photographs appear; one photo is uncolored) with a printed description of the searchlight on the facing page. Colorful and engaging. Rare. *OCLC* locates a single copy at the Henry Ford Museum, that is almost certainly the same or similar to this with 19 pages (we assume they mean leaves) and attributes the date of 1920. Although this copy is undated that seems a reasonable guess.

Description:
[Olympia, WA], 1935. Silver gelatin composite photograph (250 x 200 mm) with small tear-off monthly calendar for 1936. Inscribed "Merry Christmas, The Bowmans". A few minor nicks and spots at the edges. Excellent, unused condition. A remarkable piece of early aviation ephemera, this calendar was produced as a Christmas greeting by the early female aviator Marguerite (Martie) Bowman (1901-1985) and her husband Leslie, also a pilot. It depicts Bowman flying in her WACO INF biplane, registration number NC625Y, in formation with two others, and includes portraits of Bowman, her husband, and their daughter Larnie Bowman Allen. We have learned from one of the Bowmans' grandchildren that Larnie joined the family profession, becoming a wing-walker at eight and soloing at twelve. The Bowmans established an aviation business together and, during the 1920s, 30s and 40s, Martie Bowman ferried planes from factories and regularly participated in air races. She competed in the 1930 Women's Dixie Air Derby from…

n.p. 1941. Period notebook bound in half cloth and hand titled paper covered boards with hand drawn pictorial cover plate of RAF squadron emblum. Thick 4to. Spectacularly illustrated with exceptionally detailed and artistic pen and ink drawings, cut-away diagrams, charts, tables, etc in holograph. With the outbreak of the European war, the British Royal Air Force engaged various aircraft manufacturers in the technical training of many of its fighter pilots. These flyers would attend lectures on all aspects of aerodynamics and aeronautics delivered by the company's designers, technicians, etc. This was the case with M.A Banister, the owner and author of this notebook. Possessing an immense artistic talent, Bannister filled the pages of his book with extraordinary and often breath taking sketches and diagrams. Many of these pen and ink full page drawings depict stunning full page images of various aircraft including Spitfires, Tiger Moths, Short Sterlings, etc. Also included is a plethora of hand…

Washington D. C. Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces. 1944. Punch and clipbound in stylized titled coloured pictorial wrappers. Thin 4to. Classified "Restricted" and marked as such on each page. The December 1944, Original "Brown Cover" issue. Profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings, maps, diagrams, charts, etc. During its time, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning was considered the most sophisticated aircraft Lockheed had ever built. In February 1937, the U.S. Army Air Corps released Specification X-608, a daunting requirement that called for speed, range, and climb capabilities impossible to achieve at that time with a single-engine aircraft. In Burbank, California, a Lockheed design team led by Hall Hibbard, and assisted by a young engineer named Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, immediately began a series of designs that would culminate in the contract-winning XP-38. Jim Gerschler became project engineer on the aircraft. The XP-38 (it was many months before it was…

This copy has some light soil to the edges of the text block, a smallish see thru type stain to the top edge of the text block. The priced jacket has some lightish rubbing wear else fine. The story of the men who flew in America's secret war in Laos. I am probably wrong but I think that the Mel Gibson movie "Air America" was at least partially based on this book. A very nice copy. New York: Crown Publishers, Inc, 1987. First Edition. First Printing. Hardcover. Very good/Good. xi, [1], 420 pages. Illustrations. Endpaper maps. Chronology. Notes. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. Some wear to DJ edges. Christopher Robbins (19 November 1946 - 24 December 2012) was a British writer and journalist. He is best known for his 1978 bestseller Air America, a non-fiction book which was made into a film in 1990. It is about the secret airline run by the CIA for covert operations during the Vietnam War. He later specialized in investigative work—especially about the CIA—writing pieces for the Observer Magazine. During the 1970s, prior to the publication of his bestseller, Robbins was just a freelance journalist. In 2008, In Search of Kazakhstan: The Land that Disappeared won the Dolman Best Travel Book Award. Another book of his, The Empress of Ireland won the Saga Award for wit. Robbins has compiled a remarkably detailed and gripping log on the US Air Force pilots who flew in defense of…

Description:
San Diego, California: American Astronautical Society (AAS), 1981. xvi, 310 pages. Third printing of Volume 1 in the AAS History Series, that was first published in 1977. Laid in is a handwritten note from Gene Emme to NASA archivist Lee Saegesser, with whom Emme had worked closely for years in the NASA History Office. Emme was NASA's first official historian and the founder of the NASA History Office. Through national meetings, technical meetings, symposia and publications, the American Astronautical Society has provided the perspectives and expertise of the leading American space professionals in advancing all space activities. In this book 13 of those professionals provide important perspectives on the history of flight in the U. S. just after the opening of the National Air and Space Museum.
