This is an extended version of the Heike Monogatari (The Tale of the Heike). Complete set of 16 volumes bound as eight volumes, two per volume. Original watoji (4-hole, stitched) bindings for all volumes, published during Meiji 16 (1883) in Tokyo. 16 Cover color illustrations by Utagawa (or Ochiai) Yoshiiku, with 56 black & white illustrations. Some moisture damage to the first three volumes, otherwise in Very Good condition, with the illustrations clean & bright. The famous chronicle of the Genpei War (The Heike Monogatari). A classic of Japanese history, includes much on the bushi, supremacy of the military class over the decadent Kyoto Court nobles, martial arts, the Hogen insurrection, Go-ShiraKawa, the Heiji tumult, Taira and Fujiwara, plots against the capital and death of Kiyomori. 1925. Original photograph album. Very Good. Oblong, string-tied album of black cardstock leaves, 11" x 13", photographs mounted on 35pp, blanks at the rear. Bound in black, flexible boards with an embossed sailing ship and gilt lettering (Photo-Album) on the cover. Pasted in are 116 albumen and silver gelatin prints, ranging from small candids to 8 ½" x 10 ½" group portraits, a few fading, overall sharp and clean. Laid into the album are a Japanese news article, a small head-shot of an older gentleman, and a watercolor portrait (10" x 8 ¼") of a man's face. Most of the photographs in this album. circa 1895-1925, were taken in Mie-Ken (or "Mie prefecture"), part of the Kansai region on the main island of Honshu. The group and individual portraits reflect new social and economic developments and cultural norms that emerged during this period. Woodblock reprint of two famous Japanese picture scrolls which recorded the unsuccessful Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century.The scrolls were originally drawn between 1275 and 1293 for the samurai Suenaga Takezaki to record his battlefield valor and deeds during Kublai Khan's attempted invasions of Japan. The scrolls depict the Battle of Bun'ei in 1274 and the Battle of Koan in 1281.
Complete in 3 volumes, with 66 pages with 56 color plates in vol. 1, 54 pages with 33 color plates in vol. 2, and 100 pages with 54 color plates in vol. 3. Edited by Beisai Kubota.Condition: paper covers slightly worn, a few pages browned (mostly Japanese text pages) but plates bright and vivid.
