About This Item
Utica: Curtiss & White, Printers, 1855. Hardcover. 12mo. Original brown pebble-grain blind-embossed cloth with gilt spine lettering. 419pp, (1p). Frontispiece, 8 small engravings. Very good. Faint edgewear, with spine lightly sunned but gilstamping bright and fresh; front and inner flyleaves bear some 1859 pencilled notes about various Smiths born in the 1830s (relatives?). A tight and lovely first edition of this quite scarce medical title, "A Book for Everybody" so claims the title page -- an early and seminal guide on using plants in the healing process and how the Native Americans utilized them. Like many medical texts of this era it has a kind of smorgasbord approach, and includes advice on treating ailments in cattle and poultry and a chapter titled "Remarks on Hunting, Fishing, and Catching Game.
