Browning of the two pages adjoining the original front covers, otherwise a very good, square copy of these early experiments in genetics. "William Bateson was one of the pivotal figures in the early history of genetics, having championed the promise of Mendelism to unravel the secrets of heredity. Many refer to the "school" of genetics he directed at Cambridge between 1900 and 1910, but few note that Bateson's group consisted primarily of women. Bateson turned to botanists, zoologists, and physiologists associated with Newnham College, Cambridge, for critical assistance in advancing his research program at a time when Mendelism was not yet recognized as a legitimate field of study. Cambridge women carried out a series of breeding experiments in a number of plant and animal species between 1902 and 1910, the results of which provided crucial evidence that both supported and extended Mendel's laws of heredity." - Marsha L. Richmond, "Women in the Early History of Genetics" Isis, Vol. 92, No. 1 (Mar. 2001), 55-90. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/N/A. Octavo.

London: London: printed for J. Nourse, at the Lamb, opposite Katherine-Street, in the Strand, 1746. 1st Edition . Full leather. Very Good. First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. London: Martin Secker, First edition 1916.. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 324 pages. Original maroon cloth in good tight clean condition, lettered and ruled in black Top edge slightly dusty Front pastedown with two neat owners' signatures. Endpapers slightly browned. Dustjacket, unclipped, with only minor wear and rubbing to edges. The spine slightly browned. Despite these minor blemishes the volume presents very well. Important first novel by Welsh author Herbert Millingchamp Vaughan, 1870-1948. A rare dystopian science fiction work in which a vellum scroll is found in a metal cylinder in the Andes. This relates the dystopian history of the miniature planet Meleager, where the practice of eugenics ensures the death of defective children and where women have no power or political rights A rare book with a possible influence on Charlotte Haldane's Man's World and feminist dystopian literature generally, especially in the areas of eugenics and male patriarchy
