London: Printed by T. Bensley and Son for Robert Triphook, 1816. Pp. xvi, 373, [2] - Directions & Errata. 19 plates, 6 of which are printed on India Proof paper and laiddown, and 8 are hand-coloured, approx. 50 text illustrations, 3 of which are printed on India paper and laiddown. Full tan leather with two triple-ruled frames to upper and lower covers, and centered with gilt-stamped oval coat of arms for William Wyndham Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville [1759-1834], surrounded with the latin version of: "Chancellor of the University of Oxford (Sigill) Seal. W. W. Baron Grenville", 5 raised bands, gilt ruled compartments, gilt-stamped spine lettering, all edges gilt. Covers scuffed and rubbed, some spotting to upper cover, very mild spotting to verso of frontispiece, and mild offsetting to title-page, otherwise a very good to near fine copy of a fascinating book. Baron Grenville served as British Prime Minister 1806-7. In 1807, during his administration, the slave trade was abolished. Prior, he served as the Foreign Secretary and oversaw the Wars of the French Revolution. He was also Chancellor the University of Oxford from 1810 to his death in 1834.
