New York: Geo. Hayward, 1855. Print. Lithograph. 4" x 6".

This color lithograph, made for D.T. Valentine's "Manual of the Common Council of the City of New York" from 1855, depicts the Reservoir of Manhattan Water Works in 1825. It opened in 1801 and was quickly deemed inadequate. The wall of the side of the reservoir is decorated with pillars with a sculpture on top. An energetic looking horse is pulling a cart in front of it, and passerbys walk on the street.

The print is in good condition.

D.T. Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years and took it upon himself to compile the "Manuals," which he updated and published annually from 1841-1866. These manuals were directories of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York, richly illustrated with maps, lithographs, and engravings.
