Description

First Edition, First Printing. Very good plus in original green cloth, titled in gilt on spine. Two colored frontispieces. Scarce thus. This work provides an excellent summary and analysis of the economy in the United States right after the end of the Civil War. Sir Samuel Morton Peto (1809-1889) was a prosperous building contractor who was in involved in the construction of many important building and railway projects in Great Britain and abroad. He also served several terms in Parliament, but had to resign after accepting a government contract. Unfortunately, his economic and business positions were devastated in a general financial panic, and he actually filed for bankruptcy in 1868. Front hinge starting, but otherwise binding is square and sound; foxing to preliminary pages, otherwise text is clean and bright. Attractive bookplate to front free endpaper. Octavo. xv + [i], 428 pp.
