About This Item
Yale University Press, 1993. Signed (with first name only) and inscribed by the author First Edition with full numberline 4to size blue clothbound hardcover with dust jacket; 592 pages with some black and white photographs and photo illustrated dust jacket Some jacket: "Rodin scholar Ruth Butler draws for the first time on closely guarded archives and letters to disentangle the facts of this legendary artist's life from the myths that have grown up around him. Lavishly illustrated with more than two hundred archival photographs, this book proves new interpretations of the motivations, execution, and reception of Rodin's extraordinary artistic creations. Quoting extensively from letters to and from Rodin, (the author) captures his voice and those of his contemporaries throughout his long life... (The author) reveals how much Rodin suffered when his powerful work - so different from the accepted style of his time - was rejected by his patrons, and she discusses the ironic contract between Rodin's acclaim in the world at large and the opposition he faced in France, much of it the result of the political conflict of the Third Republic." The author wrote several other publications about Rodin. She spent more than ten years working on this biography. Some wear to jacket with edgewear, sunned spine, quarter of an inch tear on back of jacket, one inch tear on front camouflaged in spine and another one inch tear to bottom of front inside jacket flap; bumped corners. Pages 45-48 are creased at bottom corner. There is some light soil or possibly foxing to top of book and a teeny light spot (or foxed spot) to outside pages. . Signed by Author. First. Hard Cover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall.
