London: Collins, 1979. SIGNED BY AUTHOR to front endpaper with dedication 'To Mabel, to remind you of many happy times and with affection from Dorothy de Rothschild - May 1979'. Gold title on red boards which are very clean and unmarked with no wear. Internally very clean, tight and unmarked. A near Fine copy. Dustjacket has creasing to top and is not price clipped. A large format volume of 175 pages. Profusely illustrated. INCLUDED ALSO is a leather bookmark from a binding in the library at Waddesdon Manor. Dorothy married James Armand de Rothschild at the age of 17 in 1913. He was 35 years old, the son of Edmond James de Rothschild of the Paris branch of the Rothschild family. In 1922 James de Rothschild inherited Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire which became their country home. After his death in 1957, Waddesdon Manor was bequeathed to the National Trust, but the surrounding estate and small mansion at Eythrope in Buckinghamshire were retained by Mrs. de Rothschild. She remained a strong influence on the preservation and development of the house and collections at Waddesdon. At her death in 1988 she left 94 Million Pounds, which was the largest probated estate in England at that date. Her book charts the story of Waddesdon Manor, built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in the 1870's in the style of a 16th century French chateau. Filled with the magnificent and varied works of art the Baron collected throughout his life and embellished with carved wood panelling from old Parisian houses. Dying as a childless widower, the Baron was succeeded by his youngest sister, Alice, who continued to run Waddesdon in the tradition established by her brother. Note: A LARGE HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.85 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST L. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Some say he was the greatest ever - a rare combination of power and speed who made acrobatic catches and never failed to get a hit when his team needed it most. The son of an Oklahoma miner, he was the anchor in center field for a Yankees team that won seven World Championships, he was three times the league MVP, he won the Triple Crown in 1956, and in 1961 he dueled teammate Roger Maris in the most exciting single-season home run contest ever. He was so famous that to identify him people didn't even bother to say his last name, or even all of his first. He…
