London, Longmans, Green and Co., 1911.. FIRST EDITION 1911, WITH A FOUR PAGE AUTOGRAPHED LETTER TO LORD ROSEBERY AND AUTHOR'S COMPLIMENT SLIP. 8vo, approximately 225 x 140 mm, 9 x 5½ inches, 28 photographic illustrations mostly 2 images on 1 plate, pages: x, [1], 1-335 including index, original publisher's blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Slight rubbing to cloth, corners slightly bumped, endpapers age-browned, engraved book-plate to first pastedown, probably that of Lord Rosebery. A very good copy. The letter dated 7 April 1911 and written on Ditchingham House headed notepaper: "Dear Lord Rosebery, Some years ago I remember you telling me that you had read my book "Rural England" I now send you another "Rural Denmark and its Lessons" which I venture to hope that you may find time to look through. I do not know that you will share the conclusions to which I have come, or at any rate all of them, but I hope & believe that you will agree with me that the extension of ownership (not one certainly among small holders) & the establishment of cooperation are desirable & indeed necessary to our national welfare. Believe me truly yours, H. Rider Haggard. P.S. My Salvation Army Settlement scheme was duly knocked on the head by a Departmental Committee appointed to that end. It seems a pity since had it been carried out the trebling of the value of the enormous tracts of territory which the Canadian Gov.t was then willing to give for its execution (which has since happened) would have made of it (I believe) a great financial, as well a(sic) social success. But the scheme trod on too many toes & offended too many vested interests, So having done the work I was sent to do I was duly executed by the usual Departmental Committee hatchet! That does not matter but unfortunately the lost opportunity will never return." MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
